Lahontan Reservoir, named after an ancient lake, was originally constructed as part of an irrigation project to water adjacent farmland. With willows and cottonwoods scattered along 69 miles of shoreline, the park is one of the most popular locations in Nevada for boating, fishing, water-skiing, equestrian riding, camping, and year-round enjoyment of the outdoors. When conditions permit, canoeing from Fort Churchill to the lake makes for a fantastic day excursion. Wild horses, bobcats, foxes, and deer share the park with migratory waterfowl, pelicans, herons, egrets, and raptors, among others. Lahontan is also an eagle nesting location.

The park's vegetation consists primarily of sagebrush communities. Along the lake's shoreline are numerous patches of native cottonwoods and willows. Along the Carson River, both upstream and downstream of the lake are riparian zones. The majority of the park is less than 4,000 feet in elevation. Ancient volcanic flows are prevalent in the highlands surrounding the lake. Wild horses, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and deer coexist with a diversity of birds in the park. Frequently observed are migratory waterfowl, pelicans, herons, egrets, and raptors. Lahontan is one of the few places where bald eagles nest.
